Take a Tour of Alcatraz Island, located in the middle of San Francisco Bay, is a major attraction for any visitor to the area. It was also named as ‘The Rock’. The 12-acre Alcatraz Island was declared a military reservation in 1850 but was later converted into a federal penitentiary in 1934. It boasts a long history that ended with some of the most notorious prisoners and daring escapes.
Alcatraz Island is now a busy tourist spot, because of the old abandoned prison, the oldest working lighthouse on the West Coast, remnants of early military protection, and natural features such as rock pools, marine wildlife, a seabird colony, etc. An interesting thing are that the night tour operates year-round, Thursday-Monday evenings. The evening includes roundtrip ferry transportation, and a variety of special presentations. Tickets are available online and children under age 5 are free.
